Move an eSIM when switching between iPhone and Android in Australia: carrier-supported methods and fallbacks
Direct answer
In Australia, do not assume that an iPhone and an Android phone can transfer an eSIM directly to each other.
As checked on 6 August 2026, the Australian-facing Apple and Google direct cross-platform support lists name no Australian service provider, so use a documented carrier transfer, carrier activation, QR-code activation or carrier-assisted replacement unless your carrier now states otherwise for the exact phones and plan.
Keep the old phone and its working service available until the replacement method is ready, then verify calls, SMS and mobile data on the new phone before deleting the old eSIM profile.
Who this applies to — and the limitation
This guide is for an Australian consumer moving an existing mobile number between an eSIM-capable iPhone and an eSIM-capable Android phone while keeping the same carrier.
It does not cover moving the number to a different carrier, enterprise-managed fleets, watches or travel-data eSIMs, and it cannot guarantee a direct path for every account type, imported handset or mobile virtual network operator.
Mental model and essential terms
An eSIM is a carrier profile downloaded to compatible device hardware, while the mobile service is the carrier account and phone number that the profile authenticates.
Transfer means moving the active service from one device profile to another; activation means enabling a profile; replacement means issuing a new profile; deletion means removing a profile from a device.
A service outage begins when the old profile stops working before the new profile can make calls, receive SMS and use mobile data.
The relationship is carrier-first: the phone presents a transfer or activation interface, but the carrier must authorise the mobile service and may require account or identity checks.
Preflight: protect the working service
- Confirm that the new phone supports eSIM and record its EID or device identifiers from Settings or the device box.
- Update both phones, connect them to reliable Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth if the platform path asks for it, and set a screen lock on each device.
- Sign in to the carrier account as the service owner and make sure you can receive its verification message or reach a store with photo identification.
- Back up the old phone and move any account-recovery codes that do not depend on the phone number before changing the service.
- Do not delete, reset, trade in or hand over the old phone before the new service passes the verification checklist.
Choose the supported method
- Use a built-in direct transfer only when the current carrier and both exact phone models appear in the platform or carrier support documentation.
- Use the carrier application or portal when it explicitly offers transfer, restore or replacement for your service and device.
- Use QR-code activation only with a current QR code issued through the carrier's documented channel and scan it from the new phone's eSIM setup screen.
- Use carrier-assisted replacement when the account cannot pass self-service verification, the provider is absent from the direct-transfer list, the QR code is unavailable or spent, or the service becomes inactive.
Telstra: documented cross-device route
- On the new phone, open My Telstra, choose the mobile service, select Set up or manage eSIM, then choose Transfer or restore eSIM and follow the identity prompts.
Telstra documents Apple Quick Transfer separately for two iPhones or two iPads, so do not treat that Apple-to-Apple feature as the iPhone-to-Android method.
If Transfer or restore eSIM is absent, Telstra says only the account owner normally sees it and directs an authorised contact to a store with photo ID.
- If the profile was deleted or is missing, use the restore path in My Telstra; if verification cannot be received, use Telstra's documented support or store route.
Optus and Vodafone: evidence-led fallbacks
The verified Optus source in this review is an enterprise Apple Quick Transfer guide, not a consumer cross-platform procedure.
- For an Optus consumer service, do not follow invented app steps; use the current My Optus support channel or an Optus store to request the exact transfer, activation or replacement method for the account and phones.
Vodafone's current device guides document carrier-issued QR-code activation on both iPhone and Samsung paths, but they do not establish universal cross-platform direct transfer.
- For Vodafone, obtain the replacement or activation details through Vodafone's current account or support route, then scan the carrier-issued QR code from the new phone; prepaid activation may require valid identification.
What the phone platforms currently support
Apple's Australian Android-to-iPhone page requires iOS 26, compatible Android software, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a supported service provider, and the listed providers currently exclude Australia.
Apple's iPhone-to-Android documentation also limits direct eSIM transfer to listed carriers and says the iPhone service stops working when the transfer completes.
Google documents Android-to-Android transfer during setup or through Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device, but says operator differences apply.
Google also says the old device or eSIM can continue working when an attempted transfer does not succeed, which is why deletion is not a troubleshooting step.
Activate, verify and handle failure
- Start the selected carrier-supported process on the new phone while both phones remain powered, nearby and connected to Wi-Fi.
Expect the old profile to become inactive when a transfer completes; the timing is controlled by the carrier and platform path.
- On the new phone, make an outgoing call, receive a call, send and receive an SMS, turn off Wi-Fi and load a page over mobile data, and confirm that the intended number appears in the phone settings.
- Only after every required service works should you disable or delete the old eSIM, reset the old phone or give it to another person.
- If the new phone has no service, keep it on Wi-Fi, do not repeatedly delete profiles or reuse codes, record the exact error and contact the carrier's official support channel.
- If the carrier cannot restore service remotely, take the new phone, old phone, account details and photo ID to the carrier's store or approved support route.
Security, original asset and limitations
Treat an eSIM QR code, carrier activation code and account-verification message as sensitive service credentials and do not send them to an unverified helper.
The publication package requires a source-versioned Australian carrier-by-direction register covering Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, the verified method, account type, device prerequisites, identity route, source URL and checked date.
Before publication, obtain and bind a current public Optus consumer support source or label every Optus method as carrier-assisted and unverified for self-service.
Carrier support and operating-system menus change quickly, so refresh every provider, model, account-type and software-version claim at the launch gate.
No direct-transfer path in this article was hands-on tested, and the absence of a carrier from a published list does not prove that no private or newly launched path exists.
