ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: plans, tools, privacy and task fit

Direct answer and scope

There is no universal winner among ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

For most people, the best choice is the service that completes their recurring task with acceptable accuracy, usable limits, appropriate data controls and the least repair work.

This guide applies to individual users, freelancers and small teams choosing a chat-based AI service; it does not choose an API, negotiate enterprise contracts or rank model intelligence in the abstract.

Its principal limitation is that features, plan names, limits and regional availability change quickly, and Nerd Mango did not run a controlled hands-on benchmark for this revision.

Mental model: service, plan, model, tools and data

Use a five-layer model to compare these services: service, plan, model, tools and data controls.

The service is the app or website you open, while the plan controls access and usage limits.

The model produces the response, and tools allow tasks such as web research, file analysis or image creation.

Data controls govern what may be stored, connected, reviewed or used.

A plan is the subscription tier attached to an account, not a promise that one fixed model or limit will remain available forever.

In this guide, a context window means the amount of conversation and uploaded material that a model can consider for one response.

Treat it as reading capacity, not as a promise that every detail will be recalled or used correctly.

Deep research is a multi-step research workflow that searches, reads and synthesises sources; ordinary web search is usually a shorter retrieval step.

A connector or connected app gives the service permission to read from or act through another service, so convenience and data access increase together.

A project, memory or reusable instruction feature supplies continuing context, but its exact storage, sharing and deletion behaviour must be checked for the account type being used.

Current consumer-plan snapshot

OpenAI currently presents ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro as individual plans.

Anthropic provides Claude Free and paid Pro and Max individual plans, with usage limits that still vary by workload and demand.

Google distinguishes Gemini without an AI plan from AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra where those subscriptions are available.

Use a free tier to learn the service's workflow, not to predict permanent capacity.

ChatGPT Free includes limited access to file uploads, data analysis, image generation and deep research.

Claude Free has usage limits that vary with demand, conversation length and feature use.

Google publishes different Gemini feature and context limits by plan.

At-a-glance trial comparison

Product / service | Individual plan structure | Principal tool categories | Consumer / business-data boundary | Trial-first use case | What must be verified | Principal limitation

ChatGPT | Free, Go, Plus and Pro | Search, files, data analysis, images, research and connected apps; access varies | Consumer controls differ from business terms; qualifying business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default | Trial first when one workflow needs several tool categories | Country plan, quotas, connected apps and data controls | Plan, region and usage limits change

Claude | Free, Pro and Max | Document and writing workflows, file creation or editing, and coding capabilities where available | Consumer terms differ from commercial terms; commercial chats and coding sessions are not used for training unless the stated opt-in or feedback path applies | Trial first when the recurring test is document, writing or coding work | Plan capacity and access to files, research and Claude Code | Usage limits and included capabilities vary

Gemini | Without an AI plan; AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra where available | Research and media tools, published context options and connected Google services | Consumer privacy controls differ from Workspace; Workspace customer data is not used to train underlying models outside Workspace without permission | Trial first when the task depends on Google services or a Gemini-specific tool | Account type, country, administrator controls and plan limits | Availability depends on account, region and administration

How the products differ in practice

Trial ChatGPT first when your test needs several tool categories, such as search, file analysis, image creation or connected apps, in one service.

Before deciding, verify that the required tool is available on your plan, account and region.

Trial Claude first when your test centres on a sustained document, writing or coding workflow.

Verify which file, research and Claude Code capabilities are included in the plan you can buy.

Trial Gemini first when your test depends on Google services, a published large-context option or a Gemini-specific media or research tool.

Verify the account type, country, administrator controls and plan limits before deciding.

These are selection hypotheses, not measured quality rankings.

For cited research, compare whether each source actually supports the nearby sentence, whether the answer distinguishes fact from inference and whether important contrary evidence is missing.

For file work, use the same non-sensitive sample and compare extraction, table handling, revision control, export format and the effort needed to correct mistakes.

For coding, use the same disposable repository and score whether the change is correct, tests pass, the diff is understandable and the original state can be restored.

For images or voice, test the actual language, device, accessibility need and export workflow rather than treating a feature checkmark as proof of quality.

Three practical examples

Example 1 — A student comparing public reports should favour citation traceability and file handling, then reject any answer whose cited page does not support the sentence.

Example 2 — A small-business operator who mainly works in Gmail and Drive can trial Gemini's Workspace path.

The operator should compare Workspace administration and privacy terms with the relevant ChatGPT or Claude business terms instead of assuming that consumer settings apply.

Example 3 — A developer should test one real but disposable change in each tool and choose the service that produces the safest reviewable diff, not the service that writes the most code.

A six-step decision framework

  1. Write one recurring job in observable terms, such as ‘summarise these five reports with source-linked claims’ rather than ‘help with research.’
  2. Remove confidential, personal and production data from the trial set.
  3. Run the same task with the same material and record accuracy, omissions, correction time, export quality and whether the limit interrupted completion.
  4. Inspect the exact plan, connected apps, memory or project settings, retention controls and cancellation path before entering sensitive work.
  5. Calculate the monthly cost of the plan and any separate developer or usage charges needed for the actual workflow.
  6. Keep the winner only if it passes both the task test and the data-control test; otherwise change the workflow or keep evaluating.

Business-data and privacy checkpoint

Consumer and business products must not be treated as having identical data terms.

OpenAI and Anthropic state that qualifying commercial inputs and outputs are not used for training by default, while Google states that Workspace customer data is not used to train underlying models outside Workspace without permission.

Those statements do not answer every procurement question about retention, administrator access, connected third parties, data location or contractual remedies.

For business use, verify the exact licence and written terms for training, retention, administrators, connected apps, residency and deletion before approval.

Verification, rollback and limits

Save the test prompt, source set, output and scoring notes so the decision can be repeated after a major model, plan or policy change.

Do not delete the previous tool, export path or working files until the chosen service has completed the representative workflow twice without a material failure.

Recheck the comparison when a required feature moves plans, a privacy term changes, a key integration is removed or limits prevent the normal task.

Nerd Mango has not independently verified a universal quality winner, fixed message quota, permanent model list or identical regional availability.
